Water Well Testing
Jasper County Environmental Health has grant resources to help properties dependent on private water wells as their main water source for well testing. For a $10 co-payment we will collect the sample, take it to the lab and get the results back to the owner. Wells that have had flood water over the top of the casing should be shock chlorinated prior to testing and human consumption.

Shock chlorination of private water wells is not extremely difficult and many Jasper County homeowners are capable of doing the process themselves if they choose to do so. For more information, go to the ISU Extension Disaster Recovery site.
Septic Systems
Each property owners must evaluate their own needs and their septic system. If the chance of a backup into the dwelling is non-existent or low the system may continue to be used. THe flood and ground water situation has created many unusual circumstances beyond control. Measures should be taken to minimize human or pet exposure to areas of surfacing lateral fields. Fencing the lateral field area may be appropriate for some situations. In general it is expected most lateral fields will return to functioning condition once the flooding and groundwater returns to normal levels.
